It was ok for practice, but frustrating to play compared to an acoustic kit. loose spots or indentations in the center. Especially compared to something modern like this: I also found the mesh heads developed a lot of dead/hot spots. Also it was all very finnicky, especially cymbals, and although I appreciated that the samples sounded better than vdrums at the time (in terms of realism), they still kind sucked. And I lowered the sensitivity so there was still some dynamics when I played hard, forget about those ghost notes. If I wanted to hear my ghost notes I had to put the sensitivity up high enough that when I played hard every hit sounded the same. For some background I owned a DDRUM 4SE about 15 years ago, at the time I got it because it had more realistic samples. In which case, what modules should I look at? TD-8? Which should I not look at? If tweaking is a big part of getting the kit to feel and play as realistically as possible, I wouldn't want to buy a kit that is lacking major "tweaking" options that higher end modules might have. but will all of this translate if I’m playing through a VST like addictive drums 2 or studio drummer 2? The TD-12 is pretty old, is there anything it’s lacking compared to newer TD-11 or TD-15?Īnd if stuff like hi-hat foot pedal pressure or snare positional sensing does not translate through midi to the VST’s, it wouldn’t make much sense for me to get the TD-12 and higher end pads/hats. From what I read, in the Roland family only the TD-12, TD-20, and TD-30 offer all the bells and whistles, ie ability to use the VH-12 and VH-13 hi-hats which sense foot pressure in the pedal, positional sensing on the snare so you get a different sound when you hit center vs outer edge on the snare, shallow rim shots, etc. So all I care about is maximum playability and accuracy. I don’t care about onboard sample quality as I will be using VSTs. from what I’ve read the Roland modules have so-so sounds, but offer the best playability and realism when it comes to triggering, accuracy, positional sensing, etc. I think I get 4ms but it’s been a while since I check so don’t quote me on that, but it’s low enough I don’t notice.

It works well for guitar using a vst like Guitar Rig. What kind of audio interface would I need? I have an m-audio prokeys sono 61 digital piano but don’t know if that would cut it.

I guess the first question is it even possible to play through a VST like addictive drums 2 or studio drummer 2 and experience no perceptible latency? I have an iMac i5 2.9ghz with 24GB ram. You are not confined to these onboard voices however thanks to the USB port, which gives the user access to the wealth of drum sample libraries readily.

But at the same time I want the most accurate triggering possible. While many of the drum samples are taken from Yamaha's classic acoustic drums, this module is the first in the DTX range to incorporate additional sounds created by third-party VST developers. Hi everyone, I'm wanting to buy a kit for recording, practicing when the kids are asleep, and for the kids to hopefully play one day at reasonsable volume.
